October 18th 1874

When the brig Hermoso Habanero struck on the rocks at Sudmore below Mottistone, the crew took to their boats, but as the sea was so rough they had to secure them to the anchor in the bows of the vessel. Eight people were rescued with much difficulty, in the heavy surf.

In the afternoon of the next day her main mast was carried away and she broke up within half an hour. Her cargo of rum, sugar and mahogany, was strewn along the coast from Brighstone to Brook (no doubt this received a warm welcome when the coastguards were not around).
