Another story concerned Phil Jacobs, who like his brother, Ben, was a large man, tall and upright in his trademark bowler hat (see Lifeboat presentation photograph).

One day on a lifeboat practice Phil’s bowler came off. It was quite rough and the coxswain was loath to recover the hat in spite of Phil’s urgent requests. ‘Bugger your hat’ he said, but in the end he went about and picked it up. Phil’s concern was soon clear to all - inside the hat band was a large number of pound notes. He will certainly never have been allowed to forget that incident...
