In 1889, the married members played the bachelors, so the villages must have supplied enough players for two teams at least.

Saturday, 12th October 1889 - Benedicts v Bachelors

A cricket match was played on Saturday between the married and single members of the Brooke and Mottistone Cricket Clubs, and resulted in a win for the former by a narrow margin of three runs, Mr Sams Captained the Benedicts with great skill and judgement.  Mr B Jacobs officiating for the Bachelors.  The victory of the Benedicts was mainly due to the hard hitting of Mr F Newbery, who contributed 32 in fine style, his chief supporter being Mr F Cooke with 15.  Messrs. F & J Newbery also bowled finely for their side.  For the losers, Messrs. B Jacobs bowled splendidly for the Bachelors, his efforts being well seconded by Mr W Jacobs.  After the match the combined teams with umpires and scorers sat down and did ample justice to a splendid supper provided by Host & Hostess Knellar of the Sun Inn, Hulverstone.  After the cloth was removed, the order of the day was toast and song until closing time terminated the proceedings which, all present fully enjoyed.
