Edward Whitewood as a young child remembers staying at Hanover during the war:

One day I plucked up courage and ventured into the attic, it had always intrigued me. I couldn’t believe my eyes - it was like an Aladdin’s cave. There were unused painted buckets and spades with Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck on them, beach balls deflated in their packets and so perished I couldn’t even blow them up, however hard I tried. There were sand castle flags and masses of other things I’d never seen the likes of before.  What it was, of course, was the old shop stock. The beaches were out of bounds during the war and there were no holidaymakers, so such items were just put away and forgotten about. To me it was a treasure trove.
