Despite Mrs Smith saying ‘we were terrible when we first started,’ another successful activity that the Seely Hall and the W.I. made possible, was the Ladies’ Choir.

The Choir was formed in 1953 under the leadership of Mrs Smith and developed into what a newspaper called ‘one of the finest ladies’ choirs in the Island, if not the finest.’  They brought much honour and glory to Brook, frequently winning awards at the Isle of Wight Music Festival (they never failed to bring home at least one cup) and giving concerts all over the Island.

The choir hit the headlines (below) when a surprise change to the competition rules meant they could no longer enter for a particular cup. The new rules stipulated a minimum of twenty  voices which was more than they could muster (having regularly won this same cup with thirteen voices).
